If you’ve ever stood on the stone terraces at the Omni Grove Park Inn as the sun drops behind the mountains, you know the feeling. The ridgelines turn soft shades of blue and gold, the air cools, and for a minute everyone in your family stops scrolling and just looks. That’s the moment so many families tell me they wish they could keep.
I’m Valerie, an Asheville family photographer, and I create luxury fine-art portraits of families, children, and seniors here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Many of the families I photograph are staying at the Grove Park Inn, and they want their trip to include something more lasting than a phone full of snapshots. This guide walks you through how Grove Park Inn family photos actually work, where we can go for those big mountain views, and how a session fits gracefully into a resort stay.
The Grove Park Inn has welcomed guests since 1913, perched on Sunset Mountain with the Blue Ridge spread out in front of it. Families come for the spa, the golf, the stone fireplaces in the Great Hall, and those famous sunsets. It’s a place where you slow down, and that ease is exactly what makes a resort stay such a good time for portraits.
This is the first question most families ask, so let’s start here. The resort sets its own rules for professional photography. Its resort policies say anyone who wants professional pictures on the property must be an overnight guest and have prior approval, and during busy seasons the resort may not be able to approve requests at all.
Because of that, I don’t build your session around the resort grounds. Instead, I photograph Grove Park Inn guests at mountain-view locations a short drive away, where we have room to move, beautiful light, and views that rival anything from the terrace. Your stay is still the heart of the trip. Your portraits simply happen just down the road. Policies can change, so I always check the current rules as we plan your session, and I’ll never promise you a spot we can’t use.
One of the best parts of being an Asheville vacation photographer is how much variety is close by. Here are a few of the location experiences I love for families staying at the inn. We’ll choose the right one together during your consultation call.

Nothing says “we were in the Blue Ridge Mountains” quite like layer after layer of ridgelines fading into the distance. Parkway overlooks give us that iconic view with very little walking, which makes them a wonderful choice when grandparents or little ones are part of your group. Not every overlook works for portraits on every day, so I’ll pick the spot that suits your family, the light, and the season.
If you’re dreaming of soft, glowing light and tall grass catching the sun, a golden-hour field session is pure magic. It’s relaxed and playful, and kids can run, twirl, and explore while I capture the real connection between you. These sessions feel romantic and timeless, and the mountains still frame everything in the background.

For families with older kids or teens who love a little adventure, Bearwallow Mountain is a favorite. A short hike leads to an open summit with sweeping views in every direction. It’s a great fit if your family would rather earn the view than drive up to it, and the wide-open space gives us lots of room to play.
Curious about the estate across town? I also photograph families visiting Biltmore, and my guide to working with a Biltmore family photographer explains how those sessions work.
A portrait session should feel like one of the highlights of your trip, not something you squeeze in between tee times. Here’s how we make it easy.
Evening light is my favorite for mountain portraits because it’s warm, soft, and flattering for every age. A late-day session usually pairs perfectly with a dinner reservation afterward, so the whole family is already dressed up and ready to celebrate.
You’ll have plenty on your itinerary already, from spa appointments to tee times to dinners out. During our consultation call, we’ll map out the timing of your styling, your makeup, and your session around the rest of your plans, so you never feel rushed. All you need to do is show up and enjoy each other.
Many Grove Park Inn trips are milestone trips: a big anniversary, a special birthday, or grandparents treating everyone to a getaway. These are some of my favorite sessions. I’ll guide large groups through the whole family together, each branch of the family, the grandkids with their grandparents, and quiet moments for the couple who brought everyone here.

I designed my luxury portrait experience for families who want beautiful results without the stress of planning everything themselves. Here’s what it includes.
You can see more of my work on my family and children’s portraits page, and learn how the experience is structured on my investment page.
The resort requires prior approval for any professional photography, and only for overnight guests, and during busy seasons it may not approve requests at all. I photograph Grove Park Inn guests at nearby mountain-view locations instead, and I’ll check the current policy as we plan.
The locations I recommend are a short drive from the inn. We’ll choose one during your consultation call based on the view you want, your family’s ages and mobility, and how much time you’d like to spend getting there.
I usually recommend the evening, when the light is warm and soft. It’s flattering for everyone and makes the mountains glow. We’ll set an exact time once we know your location and your plans.
Professional makeup is included. Hair styling is available as an optional add-on.
After your session, we’ll meet for a private reveal where you’ll choose your heirloom wall art and albums. Your finished artwork ships directly to your home.
If you’re planning a stay at the Grove Park Inn and the thought of a beautiful family portrait keeps tugging at you, I’d love to help. It all starts with a simple consultation call where we get to know each other and start shaping an experience that feels effortless from beginning to end.
