A Biltmore Family Photographer for Your Asheville Getaway

Family sitting together in a golden field with the Blue Ridge Mountains glowing at sunset near Asheville, NC

There’s a moment that happens on almost every family vacation to Asheville. You’re standing somewhere beautiful, maybe on the lawn at Biltmore or at an overlook with layer after layer of blue mountains stretching out in front of you, and you think, I wish we had a real photograph of all of us, right here, right now.

Not a quick phone picture with someone’s arm cut off. Not a selfie where Dad is squinting into the sun. A real portrait of your family, together, in a place you’ll always remember.

That’s exactly why I love being a Biltmore family photographer for families who travel to Asheville. I’m Valerie, and I create luxury fine-art portraits of families, children, and seniors here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Many of the families I photograph are visiting from Charlotte, Atlanta, Charleston, Nashville, Raleigh, and Florida, and they want their time here to include something more lasting than a souvenir from the gift shop.

Why Families Book an Asheville Vacation Photographer

When you’re traveling, the last thing you want is one more thing to figure out. You’ve already planned the estate tour, the dinner reservations, and the afternoon by the fire at the inn. Family portraits can easily feel like a project.

They shouldn’t. As an Asheville vacation photographer, my job is to take that work off your plate entirely, so all your family has to do is show up and enjoy each other.

Here’s what makes vacation portraits so special:

  • Everyone is already together. For many families, especially those with grown children or grandparents in the mix, a trip is one of the few times the whole family is in one place.
  • You’re relaxed. No school pickup, no work emails (hopefully). That ease shows up in your photographs.
  • The setting means something. Years from now, you won’t just see a beautiful portrait on your wall. You’ll remember the trip.

The Fully Guided Portrait Experience

I designed my luxury portrait experience for families who want beautiful results without the stress. Here’s how it works from start to finish.

1. A Planning Consultation Call

Everything starts with a conversation. We’ll talk about your trip, who’s coming, what you love, and how you picture these portraits living in your home. Are you dreaming of a large piece above the fireplace? An album for the coffee table? This call shapes every decision that follows.

2. Choosing Your Asheville Location Experience

Together, we’ll choose the location experience that fits your family and your vision. (More on location options below.)

3. Wardrobe Styling for the Whole Family

Coordinating outfits for four, six, or ten people is the part most families dread. You won’t have to do it alone. Wardrobe styling for the whole family is part of the experience, so everyone looks cohesive and polished without looking matchy or stiff. If you’d like a head start, my post on how to dress for your family portrait session is a good place to begin.

4. Professional Makeup Included

Professional makeup is included, so you can feel confident and camera-ready. Hair styling is available as an optional add-on if you’d like to be completely pampered.

5. About an Hour Together in Front of the Camera

Your session is about an hour of shooting. I’ll guide you through every moment with gentle posing and plenty of play, especially for little ones. You don’t need to know how to pose, and your kids don’t need to be on their best behavior. That’s my job.

6. A Private Reveal and Heirloom Artwork

After your session, we’ll meet for a private reveal where you’ll see your portraits for the first time and choose your heirloom wall art and albums. Then your artwork ships directly to your home, so there’s nothing to pack in your suitcase.

Family Photos at Biltmore: Tips From a Biltmore Family Photographer

Biltmore Estate is often the reason families come to Asheville in the first place, and it’s easy to see why. The gardens, the sweeping lawns, and the mountain views make a stunning backdrop for family photos at Biltmore.

A few things are helpful to know as you plan:

  • Admission is required. Biltmore charges an entry fee, so everyone in your family will need a ticket or pass to be on the grounds.
  • The estate has its own photography rules. Biltmore sets guidelines for portrait sessions on the property, and not every area is open for photography at all times. Because of that, I never promise a specific spot. We’ll plan around what’s available on your day.
  • Getting ready happens before we arrive. Biltmore’s guidelines don’t allow outfit changes, makeup, or hair styling in guest areas, so your family arrives styled, camera-ready, and in one look.
  • We keep things simple and respectful. Sessions on the estate are low-key, with minimal equipment, which suits a relaxed, natural style of portrait anyway.

If you’re staying at The Inn on Biltmore Estate or spending the day touring the house, a portrait session can fit naturally into your visit. During our consultation call, we’ll talk through whether Biltmore is the right fit for your family or whether another location might give you more of what you’re picturing.

Beyond Biltmore: Asheville Location Experiences

One of the best parts of being an Asheville family photographer is how much variety is within reach here in Western North Carolina. If you want the mountains to be the star of your portraits, these location experiences are some of my favorites.

Blue Ridge Parkway Overlooks

The Parkway offers those iconic layered ridgelines that say “Blue Ridge Mountains” the moment you see them. It’s a beautiful choice if you’re staying at the Omni Grove Park Inn or a private rental and want a classic mountain view without a long walk.

Bearwallow Mountain

For families who are up for a short hike, Bearwallow Mountain rewards you with sweeping views from the top. It’s a wonderful option for families with older kids or teens who love a little adventure, and the open summit gives us room to move and play.

Golden-Hour Fields

There’s something about tall grass and soft, glowing evening light that feels timeless. Golden-hour field sessions are dreamy, romantic, and especially lovely for families with little ones who want to run, twirl, and explore.

Why Families Trust Me With Their Portraits

My work is rooted in fine-art portraiture, and every image is hand-edited with care. I’m honored to be a 2024 NAPCP Ambassador and an NAPCP Master Photographer in the Child category (2021), and my work was featured in Inspired Magazine in 2021.

But what matters most to me is how you feel during our time together, and how you feel years from now when you walk past your portraits on the wall. You can see more of my work in my portfolio and learn more about my family and children’s portraits.
